How to find out hardware availability
First, OpenPilot hardware is not in commercial production so there is no supply=demand. This means that whenever the project does a limited production run, that the boards get “hand groomed” by the project before they are sent out to the distributors. If you want to buy one, you should:
- Monitor the Project Updates forum to find out when the boards are sent to distributors or the Global store.
- Monitor the distributors website/store as this will hold the best info about when you can buy it from them.
The Team pays for all of this up front out of their own pockets, they are not a company, they are human beings like you and me who have day jobs and families and mortgages. So to keep this hobby alive, the project does limited production runs to help fund development in a very limited way. Distributors do not make a real profit from the boards, and the team makes about the price of a beer on each board which to date does not cover the expenses. So, the secret to getting OP Hardware? Waiting, reading and being in the right place at the right time. If you can’t do those things, you might want to find a different FC to keep you busy until you do
